Russell replaced Valtteri Bottas when he joined Mercedes in 2022 after three seasons at Williams. Russell had already raced for Mercedes in 2020 during the Sakhir Grand Prix as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, and he was going for the victory until trouble hit him. The 2021 season was the most successful for Russell so far. He collected 16 points and finished 15th in the championship standings. He finished second in the Belgian Grand Prix, which ended early due to rain.
