The former Formula E or F2 champion was slowly coming to terms with the possibility that he would not race in F1. But then came the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, and when Alexander Albon was stricken with appendicitis, a replacement had to be found. The choice fell on De Vries, who not only finished the race but even scored a ninth place finish. This convinced Red Bull to give the 27-year-old Dutchman a chance in its junior AlphaTauri stable.
